I wanted an hourly log of my remaining weekly allowance, so I tried claude -p "/stats". It returned a plain chat reply, not stats — taking 2m44s and $0.159. Hourly, that's $3.82 a day. The numbers only reach the status line's stdin, and the status line doesn't run in the VS Code extension, so time spent there goes unrecorded. This book closes that gap: the full collector code, the hourly launcher, the 5 traps I hit in 7 days (3 fail silently with exit code 0), and the aggregation and report. The final chapter is a complete prompt that has Claude Code build it all for you, with every trap written in as an explicit "don't." Just asking it to "log my usage" will almost certainly hit one. Real results: free article "Measuring Claude Code Usage Over 7 Days" (https://zenn.dev/civras/articles/b2e5a92330e47e?locale=en). 6 of 15 chapters are free, through the collector code (Ch. 3). Enough to build it yourself? Go ahead. The rest covers why it breaks once built.
